Selling Business Apple Equipment: What Your Mac Fleet Is Worth

Apple hardware holds its value better than anything else in your estate. Most businesses still dispose of it as though it does not.

The Best-Performing Asset In Your IT Estate

Ask an IT manager which equipment retains the most value after a refresh and Apple is rarely the first answer. It should be.

MacBooks, iMacs, Mac minis and iPads consistently command stronger resale prices, for longer, than comparable hardware from any other manufacturer. A four-year-old MacBook Pro routinely holds meaningful value at a point where an equivalent Windows laptop has very little.

There are practical reasons for that. Apple supports its operating systems for a long time, so older machines remain usable and secure well beyond the point competitors have dropped support. Build quality means the hardware physically survives. And demand from businesses, schools, creative studios and individual buyers is deep and constant.

The result is a genuine, liquid second-hand market - and an opportunity that is regularly missed because Apple devices get boxed up with everything else and forgotten.

What We Buy

We purchase business Apple equipment across the UK, in single units through to full fleet refreshes.

  • MacBook Pro and MacBook Air - Intel and Apple silicon, all screen sizes
  • iMac and iMac Pro
  • Mac mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro
  • iPad, iPad Air and iPad Pro
  • Apple displays - Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, Thunderbolt Display
  • Accessories in volume - keyboards, trackpads, pencils, adapters and docks

Working, damaged, and faulty units are all worth listing. So are machines that will not power on.

What Determines The Offer

Factor Effect On Value
Model and year The primary driver. Identify it precisely - see below
Processor generation Apple silicon commands a clear premium over comparable Intel models
Memory and storage Significant, because Apple configurations cannot be upgraded after purchase
Cosmetic condition Screen condition and casing damage are assessed closely
Battery health Cycle count and capacity matter on portables
Activation Lock status Decisive. A locked device is worth a fraction of an unlocked one
Quantity Matched fleets from a single deployment are more attractive than mixed lots
Original packaging and chargers A modest but real uplift, particularly in volume

Because Apple memory and storage are fixed at the point of manufacture, specification affects value far more than it does on upgradeable hardware. A 16GB machine and a 64GB machine that look identical can be worth very different amounts. Always record the full configuration.

Activation Lock: The Single Most Important Step

If you take one thing from this article, take this.

Apple devices that remain linked to an Apple Account, enrolled in Mobile Device Management, or registered to Apple Business Manager cannot be reused by anybody else. The next owner cannot set the device up. It is, functionally, a locked box.

A locked Mac or iPad is worth a small fraction of an unlocked one - sometimes only its component or scrap value. This is the most common and most expensive mistake we see with Apple disposals, and it is entirely avoidable.

Before releasing any Apple device:

  • Sign out of the Apple Account and turn off Find My on the device
  • Unenrol from your MDM platform - Jamf, Intune, Kandji or whichever you use
  • Release the device from Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager if it was enrolled there
  • Erase the device - use Erase All Content and Settings, which on modern hardware performs a cryptographic erase
  • Confirm it boots to the setup assistant with no account prompt

The Business Manager step is the one most frequently forgotten. A device can be wiped, signed out and apparently clean, yet still re-enrol itself the moment it connects to the internet, because the serial number remains assigned to your organisation. Removing it from Business Manager is what breaks that link permanently.

If devices belonged to staff who have since left and nobody can sign out, tell us. There are legitimate routes to resolve this through Apple with proof of purchase, and it is worth pursuing before writing the hardware off.

Data On Apple Devices

Modern Macs and iPads encrypt storage by default. Erase All Content and Settings destroys the encryption key, which renders the data unrecoverable without physically destroying the drive.

That matters commercially as well as practically. On Apple silicon the storage is soldered to the logic board, so physical destruction of the drive means destroying the machine. Cryptographic erase lets you satisfy your data obligations while keeping the device intact and saleable.

Where your policy requires documented destruction, that can be provided as part of the process. We operate ISO 27001 certified information security management and are Cyber Essentials certified, so the paperwork stands up to audit.

Identifying What You Have

Apple model names repeat across years, which makes accurate identification important. "MacBook Pro 13-inch" describes a decade of very different machines.

The reliable approach is the serial number, or the model identifier found under About This Mac. For a fleet, the fastest route is usually an export from your MDM platform or asset register - most will produce a list of serials and configurations in a couple of clicks.

For each device, we need:

  • Model and year, or serial number
  • Processor, memory and storage configuration
  • Cosmetic condition, noting screen damage and dents
  • Whether it powers on and functions
  • Activation Lock status
  • Whether chargers and packaging are included

Timing Matters More With Apple

Apple hardware depreciates gently, but it does depreciate - and the curve steepens once a model falls out of macOS support.

The most common pattern we see is a business completing a refresh, storing the old fleet "until we decide what to do", and returning to it two years later. By then the machines have crossed a support boundary and lost a substantial share of their value while sitting in a cupboard.

The value is highest at the moment of replacement. Plan the disposal as part of the refresh rather than as a task to deal with afterwards.

Fleet Refreshes And Volume

Where an organisation is replacing an entire deployment - a design team, a school, a department, an office - matched fleets are particularly attractive, because devices of the same model and specification can be processed and resold as a batch.

If you are coordinating a large refresh, talk to us before the new hardware arrives. Aligning collection with deployment means devices move straight out rather than into storage, and you avoid the depreciation described above.

Selling Your Apple Equipment To Voice & Data Resale

We buy business Apple hardware from organisations across the UK. Devices are assessed, professionally refurbished and returned to the market, where they go on to serve schools, businesses and individuals at a fraction of the cost of new. Only equipment genuinely beyond recovery is responsibly recycled.

Collection is arranged nationwide, data destruction is available where required, and you receive a firm offer before anything is committed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you buy broken MacBooks?

Yes. Cracked screens, liquid damage, swollen batteries and machines that will not power on are all worth listing. Describe the fault as accurately as you can.

What if a device is still Activation Locked?

Tell us. It significantly affects value, but we would rather know upfront. In many cases it can be resolved through Apple with proof of purchase, and it is worth trying before accepting a reduced offer.

Do I need the original boxes and chargers?

They are not required, but they do add value, particularly across a fleet. Include them if you still have them.

Can you collect from multiple sites?

Yes. Multi-site collections are common with fleet refreshes and can be coordinated as a single project.

How do I get the serial numbers for a whole fleet?

Export them from your MDM platform or asset register. If that is not available, the serial is printed on the underside of a MacBook and on the back of an iPad.

Is there a minimum?

We are generally looking at enquiries with an estimated value of around £1,000 or more, though every enquiry is assessed on its merits.

Find Out What Your Apple Fleet Is Worth

Apple equipment is the most valuable hardware most organisations dispose of, and the most frequently underestimated. If you are refreshing MacBooks, replacing iMacs, upgrading an iPad deployment or clearing devices left behind by departing staff, it is worth a conversation before anything goes into storage.

Send us your list through our online quotation request and we will tell you what it is worth.
